Anu Modi / Caledon, ON -Dec'19-2024 : The groundbreaking ceremony officially began the construction work for the expansion at Caledon East Public-School today. As per the residents and staff members of the school, this shall be a vital project that represents a major step forward for the expanding community of Caledon. The ceremony, held at the site of the school, was attended by David Green, PDSB Chair, Trustee Brampton Wards 1 & 5, Satpaul Singh Johal, PDSB Vice Chair, Trustee Brampton Wards 9 & 10, Stan Cameron, PDSB Trustee, Caledon, Will Davies, PDSB Trustee Brampton Wards 2 & 6, Rashmi Swarup, PDSB Director of Education, Hon. With rapid residential development in the area, the current Caledon East Public School, which was originally built in 1971 and expanded in 1998 to accommodate just 254 students, no longer meets the growing educational needs of the community. The new $32.4 million facility is designed to serve 650 students and provide modern, purpose-built spaces for learning, as well as additional services for families.

In upcoming 2026 the school will be a state-of-the-art facility that reflects the evolving educational needs of the area. As part of the design, the school will feature six kindergarten classrooms, ensuring ample space for early education programs. In addition to the classrooms, a childcare centre will be included, with 73 licensed spaces to serve working parents and young children in the region.

The facility is being funded through the Ontario Ministry of Education’s $32.4 million Capital Priorities funding, which is aimed at expanding and upgrading school infrastructure in areas experiencing rapid population growth. The investment in the new Caledon East Public School will ensure that local students have access to a modern, well-equipped learning environment to support their academic and personal growth.

Since construction officially began in December 2024, with the demolition of the existing Caledon East Public School and final completion of the new facility set for the summer of 2026. Once completed, the new school will open its doors to students in September 2026, offering a modernized space for learning and community engagement.

The project also involves the demolition of the aging 1971 building, which no longer meets the demands of the growing student population. The new structure will include energy-efficient designs and modern amenities, such as larger classrooms, improved recreational areas, and enhanced accessibility features.

The new school is a critical part of Caledon’s continued growth and development. As the community experiences increased residential development, the demand for educational spaces has grown, prompting the need for a larger, more modern facility. The Peel District School Board recognizes the importance of this project, stating that the new Caledon East Public School will mark a significant milestone for the growing community.

Caledon is one of the fastest-growing communities in Ontario, and this new school will help ensure that we can provide our students with the resources and environment they need to thrive," said the Peel District School Board in a statement. "We are excited to see this project come to fruition and look forward to welcoming students to their new school in 2026. Local parents and families have expressed strong support for the new school, which they believe will greatly benefit the area. Many parents have been advocating for additional space and services to accommodate the growing population, and the new school is seen as a much-needed investment in the community's future. This new school will be a huge asset for our growing community," said one local parent. "Not only will it provide more space for our children to learn, but it will also offer daycare options for working parents, which is something our neighborhood desperately needs.

The Peel District School Board is one of the largest school boards in Ontario, serving students from kindergarten through grade 12 across the Region of Peel. The board is committed to providing equitable access to high-quality education and fostering a supportive, inclusive environment for all students. The new Caledon East Public School is part of the board’s broader efforts to expand and upgrade school infrastructure in response to the growing needs of the community.
