Karandeep-Canada : BRAMPTON, ON (February 26, 2025) – The City of Brampton is taking proactive steps to protect its economy and local jobs in response to the United States' proposed tariffs on Canadian goods. At today's City Council meeting, Brampton passed a motion that establishes the Mayor’s Tariff Task Force, focusing on reducing reliance on U.S. markets while strengthening global trade partnerships.

Mayor’s Tariff Task Force Launched

The newly formed Mayor’s Tariff Task Force will tackle several key areas:

  • City-to-City Engagement: Strengthening connections with U.S. municipalities and businesses for fair and stable trade.
  • Business Outreach: Engaging directly with U.S. companies in Brampton and identifying new market opportunities for local businesses.
  • Trade Diversification: Advocating for stronger global partnerships and interprovincial trade to reduce dependence on U.S. markets.

Call for Federal Support

Brampton is urging the Canadian government to provide emergency financial relief to local businesses to help offset the increased shipping costs and ease access to new markets. This support would ensure that Brampton’s industries remain competitive, even in the face of potential trade barriers.

“Brampton is home to critical industries that drive the Canadian economy,” said Patrick Brown, Mayor of Brampton. “The Mayor’s Tariff Task Force will not only help safeguard local businesses but will also focus on exploring new global market opportunities to keep our economy resilient.”

Reciprocal Tariff Advocacy

The City also stands in support of Canada’s proposed reciprocal tariffs in response to the U.S.'s blanket tax threat, which could reach as high as 50% on some goods. Brampton is calling on federal and provincial governments to act swiftly to protect Canadian workers and businesses.

A Unified Approach for Economic Resilience

“We are committed to ensuring Brampton's advanced manufacturing sector and our supply chains remain robust in the face of these new challenges,” said Gurpartap Singh Toor, Chair of Brampton’s Economic Development Committee. “We will work closely with federal and provincial partners to protect jobs and ensure our economy remains stable.”

A Call to Action

The City of Brampton’s actions come at a crucial time as local businesses face increasing uncertainty due to potential U.S. tariffs. The focus on strengthening international relationships, while advocating for federal and provincial intervention, aims to fortify the city’s economy and safeguard its industries.
