"Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful." – Albert Schweitzer
In the vibrant city of Mississauga, we had the opportunity to sit down with Raj Singh Sidhu, a renowned real estate professional, and learn about his inspiring journey from humble beginnings to becoming a trusted name in the industry. His story resonates with those who are first-time homebuyers, those looking to sell their properties at the best possible price, and anyone with a curiosity about real estate.
We would like to know about our background. How did you get into the real estate field?
First of all my greetings to the audience and readers of CN Canada. I came to Canada in 2000, and by 2006, I had decided to take a plunge into real estate. I’d always wanted to do something that would help my community, and I had a sales background. I enjoy meeting new people, learning about their cultures, and sharing my knowledge with them. Real estate seemed like the perfect field to bring everything together.
What were some of the challenges you faced when you first started in Canada, especially in real estate, which is known to be a competitive market?
Honestly, when I first started, there wasn’t much awareness about real estate, especially in the South Asian community. I only learned about it when I bought my first property. I was so intrigued by the process that I thought, Why not make this my career? I began by working part-time while doing odd jobs like warehouse and factory work. I would often work 15-hour days, and after a while, I realized I couldn’t keep up with that routine. I knew I had to do something different. Real estate was the natural choice for me, and in 2006, I jumped in full-time.
That’s quite a transition! What was your routine when you started out in real estate?
In the beginning, it was all part-time. But over time, I realized I wasn’t doing justice to my clients or my work. Clients have different schedules – some want to see properties early in the morning, others in the evening – and I knew I had to give my full commitment to this career. That’s when I decided to take the leap and make real estate my full-time profession.
And now, you're with one of the biggest names in the industry. Can you tell us more about the company you work with?
Absolutely! I’m with Remax Gold, one of the most reputable real estate brands across. I’ve been with them for over 13 years now. Our broker, Mr. Goldy Ghuman, is a record-breaking legend in the field. We have approximately 550 realtors across three locations, and we all work together like a team. There’s an excellent support from our admin and broker teams, and we continuously stay updated through seminars and one-on-one coaching.
What kind of values and principles guide you and your team when working with clients?
Raj Singh Sidhu: Many of us come from middle-class backgrounds and have worked our way up from odd jobs. We understand the value of hard-earned money. When clients come to us, we know they trust us with their biggest investment – their home. We treat each deal with the utmost respect, ensuring full transparency and providing the best possible service. It's about making sure the client feels happy and secure with their decision.
What makes you stand out from other real estate professionals?
I respect all my colleagues in the industry, but what sets me apart is my commitment to keeping my clients informed. I host seminars on a regular basis to educate buyers and sellers on key aspects like managing down payments, maintaining credit scores, and applying for home loans. It’s important to not just be a real estate professional, but also a trusted advisor. I also make sure to listen carefully to my clients before providing advice.
As a seasoned expert, do you have any advice for first-time homebuyers?
My advice is simple – always check the background of the realtor you are dealing with. Look at their reviews, reputation, and what people say about them. It’s essential to meet your realtor in person, ask all the right questions, and make sure they’re equipped to handle your property deal in a professional manner.
And what’s your take on the current market scenario?
Right now, it’s a buyer’s market. Interest rates are expected to decrease in December, and new policies are on the horizon. It’s important for buyers to stay informed about these changes. If anyone has questions about the market or policies, they’re always welcome to reach out to me for advice.
What makes property a good investment in today’s market?
For investors, the market is a bit tougher than before. Higher interest rates mean people are holding onto their properties longer, and as a result, prices aren’t appreciating as quickly. But we do have access to properties that are priced below market value, and I can help my clients find good deals in great locations.
You’ve been in this business for over 16 years. What areas do you cover for property sales and purchases?
My team and I cover the entire GTA and beyond. We’ve even sold properties in places like London, Oshawa, and Pickering. With the digital age, everything is online now, so we’re able to stay connected to opportunities across the region. Whether it’s residential or commercial properties, we’ve got clients covered.
What can clients expect when they approach you for a property deal?
Whether they’re a buyer or seller, clients can expect complete transparency. I first listen to their needs, understand what they’re looking for, and then propose solutions that best match their goals. I share my experience, my strategies, and always make sure they’re comfortable with the decisions they make.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to start a career in real estate?
If you believe in yourself and are passionate about helping others, real estate is a great career. It’s a field where you meet new people, learn every day, and build lasting relationships. And it’s not just about the earnings; it’s also about giving back to the community. We’ve conducted events in Malton, supported local soccer clubs, and aim to help kids achieve their dreams. Real estate is truly a field you can love if you’re willing to give your best.
That’s wonderful! Now, let's lighten things up with a Rapid-Fire Round! Ready?
Bring it on
Ques: Morning person or night owl?
Reply: I’m both! Early mornings are for my kids – I make sure to talk to them before they head off to school. But I work late into the evening to accommodate my clients’ schedules.
Ques: Rich & famous or happy & peaceful?
Reply: Happy and peaceful. I've seen people with everything money can buy, but if you can’t sleep peacefully, what’s the point? Happiness is everything.
Ques: Books or movies?
Reply: I love reading books, but like watching motivational movies. They give me all the energy I need at times!
Ques: Travelling solo or with friends?
Reply: Friends all the way! Traveling solo is overrated – I need my besties to make it fun!
Ques: Friends first or family first?
Reply: Family always comes first, but friends are like family to me. They’re my support system in both personal and professional life. Thank you so much, Raj, for sharing your incredible journey and insights. It’s clear that your success is rooted in hard work, passion, and a commitment to your community.
