Karandeep-Dec 25, 2025-Canada: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau today issued a powerful statement to mark the beginning of Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, extending his warmest wishes to Jewish communities across Canada and around the world.
“As the sun sets today, Jewish communities will come together to celebrate Hanukkah, a time to light the menorah, spin the dreidel, and enjoy the traditions that have been passed down through generations,” said Trudeau. “This is also a time to reflect on the story of the Maccabees, a powerful symbol of strength, perseverance, and resilience, values that continue to resonate with Jewish communities to this day.”
Trudeau noted the growing challenges faced by Jewish communities, especially in the wake of the October 2023 Hamas attacks. “In recent months, Jewish communities in Canada have felt increasingly unsafe, and that is unacceptable,” he said, reaffirming the government’s strong commitment to combatting antisemitism in all its forms.
The Prime Minister highlighted recent steps taken by the government to ensure the safety of Jewish Canadians, including the expanded Canada Community Security Program and ongoing support for the work of Deborah Lyons, Canada’s Special Envoy on Preserving Holocaust Remembrance and Combatting Antisemitism. Trudeau also announced the upcoming National Forum on Combatting Antisemitism, set to take place in Ottawa in February 2025.
“Hanukkah is an opportunity for all Canadians to celebrate the incredible contributions of Jewish communities to our country and to stand united against hate,” Trudeau added.
Concluding his remarks, the Prime Minister wished all those celebrating a joyful and peaceful Hanukkah, and reminded Canadians of the enduring power of light in the face of darkness.
“Chag Sameach,” he said.
