Karandeep-Dec29, 2024/Ottawa, Ontario : Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued a statement today following the passing of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, offering condolences to his family and honoring his legacy.
Today, the world lost a remarkable leader, and Canada lost a true friend, with the passing of former President Jimmy Carter," said Prime Minister Trudeau. "On behalf of all Canadians, I extend our deepest condolences to his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and his extended family and friends.
Prime Minister Trudeau reflected on his personal admiration for Carter, recalling how his father spoke highly of the former president's strong moral character and unwavering principles. "Over the years, I had the privilege of meeting him a few times, and he was always kind, thoughtful, and generous with advice on public service," he added.
Carter, who rose from humble beginnings in Plains, Georgia, to serve as the 39th President of the United States, was known for his advocacy for peace and human rights. His administration played a key role in negotiating peace between Egypt and Israel and in shaping domestic economic policies that contributed to the 1980s economic boom.
After leaving office, Carter remained deeply involved in global issues, founding the Carter Center in 1982 to focus on conflict resolution, disease prevention, and the promotion of democracy. He also served as a member of The Elders, a group of independent global leaders.
In addition to his political and humanitarian work, Carter, alongside his late wife Rosalynn, dedicated over 35 years to Habitat for Humanity, helping to build and repair homes worldwide. In 2017, the Carters led their 34th Habitat for Humanity project in Canada, building 150 homes in celebration of Canada’s 150th anniversary.
In recognition of his lifetime of service, President Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
Today, we mourn the loss of a former President and a lifelong humanitarian, whose dedication to service will continue to inspire others to make the world a better place, said Prime Minister Trudeau.
