Ottawa, Ontario - Nov 20, 2024 : In a key bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G20 Leaders' Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with Vietnam’s Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh to discuss the growing partnership between their two nations.
The leaders marked the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Canada and Vietnam, celebrating the ongoing expansion of cooperation under frameworks such as Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, the Canada-Vietnam Comprehensive Partnership, and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
During their talks, the two prime ministers identified areas for enhanced collaboration, including defence and security, trade and investment, consular affairs, and Canada’s sustainable development assistance. They particularly focused on climate change programming, clean energy transitions, and increased scholarship opportunities. The leaders also emphasized their shared commitment to upholding a rules-based international order, reinforcing the principle that disputes should be resolved peacefully and in accordance with international law.
Both Prime Ministers reaffirmed the strength of the Canada-Vietnam relationship, recognizing the significant contributions of the Vietnamese community in Canada. Looking ahead, they expressed interest in exploring the potential for a deeper strategic partnership and agreed to maintain regular communication to further advance bilateral ties.
