Karandeep-Canada: Nov-16: Lima, Peru – Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with Peruvian President Dina Boluarte on the margins of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meeting in Lima. Trudeau was joined by Mary Ng, Canada’s Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development.
The two leaders began their discussions by celebrating the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Canada and Peru, as well as 15 years since the Canada-Peru Free Trade Agreement (FTA) came into force. The FTA has been a cornerstone of the growing bilateral relationship, more than doubling trade between the two nations and opening new opportunities for businesses and people on both sides.
In their meeting, Prime Minister Trudeau congratulated President Boluarte and the Peruvian government for their successful hosting of APEC this year, noting the significance of this milestone. He emphasized that both nations share a commitment to strengthening their trade and investment ties, building on the close people-to-people connections that have long defined the relationship.
A key point of the conversation focused on ongoing collaborative projects aimed at advancing economic prosperity in the Americas. The leaders discussed the Chavimochic irrigation project, a significant initiative facilitated by the Canadian Commercial Corporation, which is expected to help improve agricultural productivity in northern Peru. They also highlighted the Canada-Peru Dialogue on Critical Minerals and Mining Sustainability, which will support responsible mining practices while promoting economic growth.
The Prime Minister outlined Canada’s continued investments in Peru’s economic diversification and development goals, particularly focusing on labour formalization, inclusive growth, and the protection of agricultural workers' rights. Canada has provided funding to improve occupational safety and health standards and to help improve access to justice for Indigenous communities in Peru, offering technical assistance to strengthen the country’s judiciary.
Another topic of discussion was the political situation in Venezuela. Prime Minister Trudeau expressed concern over the recent presidential election in Venezuela and stressed the importance of ensuring transparency in the process, with an outcome that truly reflects the will of the Venezuelan people. Both leaders reiterated their commitment to promoting democracy, human rights, and the rule of law, while reaffirming Canada's role in working with international partners to maintain global security and stability.
Looking ahead, Prime Minister Trudeau and President Boluarte agreed to maintain regular contact to continue advancing shared priorities and strengthen the bilateral relationship further.
This meeting marks another step in deepening the ties between Canada and Peru, as both countries work together to foster economic growth, enhance regional stability, and support the well-being of their citizens.
