Karandeep-Canada : Today Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued a statement marking the celebration of Thai Pongal, a harvest festival observed by Tamil communities in Canada and across the globe.
“Thai Pongal is a celebration of nature and community,” the Prime Minister said. “Over four days, families and friends will come together to decorate their homes with colorful patterns, offer prayers, and share Pongal, a sweet dish made with rice and milk that symbolizes luck and optimism for the coming year.”
Trudeau highlighted the contributions of Canada’s Tamil community, one of the largest in the world, and emphasized the importance of Tamil Heritage Month, celebrated each January. He encouraged Canadians to use this opportunity to learn more about Tamil history and to celebrate the resilience and achievements of Tamil Canadians.
The Prime Minister concluded by wishing all those celebrating a joyful festival, saying, “Iniya Thai Pongal Nalvazhthukkal,” a traditional Tamil greeting.
On behalf of the Government of Canada, Trudeau expressed his warm wishes for a prosperous and happy Thai Pongal.
