Honoring the Legacy of Louis Riel: A Champion for Métis Rights and Canadian Unity

16 November, 2024 09:07 PM

Karandeep-Canada : Honoring the Legacy of Louis Riel: A Champion for Métis Rights and Canadian Unity,  Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said, today, we pay tribute to the life and enduring legacy of Louis Riel, the iconic Métis leader, politician, and founder of Manitoba. Riel, a proud son of the Red River Settlement, dedicated his life to advocating for the rights and culture of the Métis people, forever shaping the course of Canadian history.

Riel's commitment to social justice, equality, and the protection of minority rights laid the groundwork for a stronger bond between Canada and the Métis Nation. As we commemorate his contributions today, we are reminded of the ongoing need to address the injustices faced by Indigenous peoples across the country.

In line with Riel’s vision, the Government of Canada remains steadfast in its efforts to advance reconciliation. We continue to take meaningful steps toward fulfilling the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action. Through the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Action Plan, we are working to ensure Indigenous rights are upheld, and through initiatives like the National Action Plan and the Federal Pathway, we are addressing systemic racism and violence against Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ people.

On this important day, the Government of Canada invites all Canadians to learn more about Louis Riel's life and accomplishments. Let us celebrate the rich history and culture of the Métis people and recognize their significant contributions to shaping the diverse and inclusive nation we call home. Together, we can continue the work of reconciliation and build a future of equality, justice, and mutual respect.
