Karandeep : Dec 12' 2024 – The G7 leaders emphasized their full support for an inclusive political process aimed at achieving a credible, non-sectarian, and transparent governance structure in Syria. The statement, issued following a meeting of G7 representatives, underscored the importance of this transition respecting Syria’s territorial integrity, national unity, and sovereignty.
“We stand with the people of Syria in their struggle for peace, stability, and human rights,” the G7 leaders said. “We are committed to supporting a political transition that upholds the rule of law, universal human rights—including women’s rights—and the protection of all Syrians, including religious and ethnic minorities.”
The G7 further highlighted the role of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), which monitors the ceasefire between Israel and Syria in the Golan Heights. The leaders reiterated their support for UNDOF’s mission, emphasizing the need for continued international oversight in this region.
The statement also called for accountability for the Assad regime, condemning the atrocities committed over the course of the Syrian conflict. The G7 pledged to continue efforts with the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and other partners to secure, declare, and eliminate Syria’s remaining chemical weapons stockpiles.
The leaders made clear their commitment to ensuring that any future Syrian government upholds the principles of governance that include transparency, accountability, and the protection of human rights. They expressed hope that any entity seeking to play a role in Syria’s governance will demonstrate a genuine commitment to these values.
Moreover, the G7 reiterated the importance of facilitating the safe, voluntary return of refugees who were forced to flee Syria due to the ongoing conflict. The statement called on all parties to work together to ensure the recovery and rehabilitation of Syria, emphasizing the need to prevent the collapse of state institutions and promote long-term stability.
“As we continue to stand with the Syrian people, we condemn terrorism and violent extremism in all its forms,” the leaders concluded. “We are committed to supporting the path toward peace, dignity, and the restoration of Syria’s sovereignty, for all its people.”
The G7 countries, which include Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, expressed readiness to support Syria in its political transition and work toward a future of peace and stability.
