Nov 13, 2024 -Karandeep Chopra (Editorial) : In today’s world, where global relations are increasingly interconnected, the approach of national governments towards their diaspora communities can often shape the relationship between nations. Canada, a proud symbol of multiculturalism, has long been a welcoming home for people of various cultures, ethnicities, and religions. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s leadership, the Canadian government has championed the values of equality, freedom, and inclusivity, ensuring that every community—whether large or small—has the space to thrive, express themselves, and raise their concerns. Trudeau’s Liberal government has consistently advocated for a society where diversity is celebrated, and people are free to voice their opinions, protest, and demand justice. In Canada, this freedom of expression is not just a constitutional right; it is a cornerstone of its identity. Whether it’s the right to protest for social causes, the freedom to practice one’s religion, or the ability to advocate for political change, Canadians are given the space to engage in their communities and public life. In this context, it is crucial to understand that Prime Minister Trudeau's policies are not about favoring one group over another. His government has supported all communities—whether they are Indigenous peoples, the LGBTQ+ community, immigrants, or any other minority group—with a clear focus on ensuring equality. This inclusive stance extends to the Sikh community, which, like many other groups in Canada, has been given the freedom to raise concerns about justice, human rights, and political issues that matter to them, including the Khalistan movement.

While some have raised concerns over the advocacy for Sikh rights in Canada, particularly the Sikh For Justice (SFJ) movement, it is essential to recognize that Canada’s commitment to human rights and democracy means that it does not silence any community's right to protest or voice their opinions. The SFJ is one of many groups in Canada calling for justice, just as other groups demand recognition for their own causes. Prime Minister Trudeau has not only provided support to the Sikh community but has also ensured that Canada remains a nation where people can engage with their political ideologies without fear of persecution. However, it’s important to emphasize that this support is not an endorsement of any violent or extremist behavior. Canada’s laws are clear that advocacy for any form of violence, hate, or harm against others is not tolerated. The government's support for freedom of expression should not be mistaken as an endorsement of any harmful or illegal activities. Trudeau’s approach is rooted in the belief that all communities, regardless of their history or background, deserve an equal opportunity to participate in Canadian society and seek justice through peaceful means.

The whole world knows that Canada continues to uphold the values of democracy and human rights, the Indian government’s response to the Sikh community in Canada has been less constructive. Instead of fostering better understanding, many officials in the Indian government have sometimes made negative statements about Canadian politicians and policies, particularly regarding their handling of the Sikh issue. This diplomatic rhetoric not only creates tension between the two nations but also harms the Indian community in Canada, including the Sikh diaspora. Indian-Canadians—many of whom have lived and contributed to Canadian society for generations—today might find themselves caught in the middle of these political disputes.

It is believed to be very important for the Indian government to shift its focus toward the well-being of its citizens living in Canada. Rather than making blank negative statements about Canada’s policies or government, India should support the integration, success, and safety of Indian-origin Canadians, including Sikhs. Canada is home to a thriving Indian diaspora, and its people have made substantial contributions to the country’s economy, culture, and social fabric. By showing a more constructive and supportive approach, India can strengthen its relationship with Canada and ensure that its diaspora feels secure and valued.

As two democratic nations with shared values, India and Canada should prioritize cooperation and mutual respect. Both countries stand to benefit from strong diplomatic ties, and it is in the best interests of their citizens—both in India and in Canada—that the governments foster dialogue rather than create division. The Indian government should recognize that the Canadian government’s support for freedom of expression and multiculturalism is in line with the principles of justice and democracy, not an endorsement of extremism or violence.

For Canada, the challenge is to continue supporting its diverse communities while ensuring that its laws are respected, its values upheld, and its citizens protected from hate or harm. Prime Minister Trudeau’s government has set a positive example by championing equality and inclusivity, not just for the Sikh community but for all Canadians. Moving forward, it is essential that both nations work together to preserve these values while addressing their differences in a manner that promotes mutual respect and understanding. Canada has long been a beacon of multiculturalism and freedom, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government continues to uphold these ideals by ensuring that all communities have a voice. While there may be disagreements or challenges in the relationship between Canada and India, it is crucial for both governments to focus on strengthening the bonds between them, particularly by supporting the well-being of the diaspora communities. Indian citizens in Canada, including Sikhs, should be able to thrive without fear of negative political rhetoric, while also contributing to the growth and prosperity of both countries.

From the Editor: I aim to urge people around the world to showcase actual facts about what exactly is a ground reality and if not, then at least avoid giving negative statements as negative headlines doesn't see an individual or a group. It affects horridly to everyone.
