Karandeep-Nov 2024– Jaspreet Malhi, the grieving wife of Rabinder Singh Malhi, the resident of Brampton, Ontario says that her husband was a victim of a hate crime rooted in religious discord.
Rabinder Singh Malhi was found seriously injured at a home on Deer Ridge Trail in Caledon on November 9. He was rushed to the hospital but later died from his injuries. Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have not yet disclosed the cause of death or a confirmed motive, but the victim’s family believes the killing was tied to a religious dispute.
Jaspreet Malhi described her husband as "a man of peace and respect" and expressed heartbreak over his senseless death. "As tensions rise within Brampton, misunderstandings and animosity around religion and identity have become disturbingly prevalent," she said, suggesting that growing hostility in the community played a role in her husband's murder.
The family’s statement indicated that Rabinder Singh Malhi was stabbed during an altercation over his views on Sikh independence, a topic that has caused division in the community. A pro-Khalistan activist, Malhi reportedly became a target for those who disagreed with his views.
Sikhs For Justice (SFJ), an advocacy group, also weighed in, stating that the rising rhetoric surrounding Sikh issues has created a "climate of hostility" and made individuals like Rabinder Singh Malhi vulnerable to attacks.
In addition to mourning her husband, Jaspreet Malhi is now focused on raising funds to cover the emotional and financial challenges following his death. So far, $67,000 has been raised in an online campaign to help with funeral costs and the family’s future.
The OPP has confirmed that two suspects have been arrested in connection with the case. Rajinder Kumar, 47, of Caledon, faces a charge of second-degree murder, while 35-year-old Sheetal Verma, also from Caledon, has been charged with obstruction of justice.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have yet to release further details on the motive behind the killing.
The tragedy has left the community shaken, with many calling for unity and an end to the rising tensions that have claimed another life.
