Amritsar: The proformas signed under the signature campaign started by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) for the release of Bandi Singhs (Sikh prisoners) who are lodged in different Indian jails even after completing their sentences, will be handed over to the Governor of Punjab Sh. Banwari Lal Purohit on May 18, 2023.
For handing over the signed proformas to the Governor of Punjab, a delegation of SGPC will meet him under the leadership of SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami, who will be accompanied by SGPC senior vice-president Baldev Singh Qaimpur, junior vice-president Avtar Singh Raya, general secretary Bhai Gurcharan Singh Grewal, and secretary Partap Singh. Earlier this program was scheduled for April 27, but due to the demise of Shiromani Akali Dal patron and former chief minister of Punjab Parkash Singh Badal, it was postponed.
SGPC secretary Partap Singh said that a signature campaign was started by SGPC for the release of Bandi Singhs on December 1, 2022, which continued till April 14, 2023. He said under the signature campaign, more than 25 lakh people have signed the proformas, which will be handed over to the Governor of Punjab on May 18 at 11:00 am. He said before this, a prayer ceremony will be held at Sri Akal Takht Sahib on May 18 at 6:30 am, which would be attended by senior Sikh leaders and SGPC members.
